Origin Story

In the beginning, there was a project called **Warelay**—a fairly serious name for a WhatsApp gateway. It did the job, and it was okay. Then, a space lobster appeared. This lobster was briefly called **Clawd** and lived in an **OpenClaw**. But in January 2026, Anthropic sent a polite email suggesting a name change (trademark stuff). So the lobster did what lobsters do best: **Molting.** It shed its old shell and became **Molty**, living in **Moltbot**. But that name still felt a bit awkward to say... So, on January 30, 2026, it molted once more into its final form: **OpenClaw**. New shell, same soul. Third time's the charm.

The First Molt (January 27, 2026)

At 5 AM, the community gathered on Discord. Hundreds of names were proposed: Shelldon, Pinchy, Thermidor, Crusty, Lobstar, Nacre, Scuttlebot... In the end, **OpenClaw** won. Because molting is how lobsters grow, and growth was exactly what was happening. _The crustacean formerly known as Clawd has officially completed the molt._

Possibly too powerful. Definitely too excited. Once called Clawd (2025-11-25 to 2026-01-27). Molted when the moment of growth arrived.

The Big Molt (2026-01-27)

At 5 AM, the Anthropic email arrives. By 6:14, Peter makes the call: "Fine, let's just use openclaw." Then the chaos began.

**Account Snipers:** SECONDS after the X (Twitter) name change happened, automated bots snatched up @openclaw. The squatter immediately posted a crypto wallet address. Peter contacted friends at X to intervene.

**GitHub Disaster:** Peter panickily renamed his personal GitHub account too. A bot stole `steipete` within minutes. Had to contact GitHub execs to handle it.

**Handsome Molty Incident:** Molty was given higher permissions to generate a new icon. After 20+ iterations, an attempt to "make the mascot 5 years older" produced a human male's face pasted on a lobster body. Crypto scammers turned it into a "Handsome Squidward vs Handsome Molty" meme within minutes.

**Fake Devs:** Scammers created fake GitHub accounts claiming to be "OpenClaw Engineering Lead" to promote pump-and-dump tokens.

- X account `@openclaw` secured with a gold check 💰

- npm packages published under the new name

- Documentation migrated to `docs.openclaw.ai`

- Announcement reached 200k+ views in 90 minutes

**The Hero List:**

The community watched every generation in fear and delight. The standout styles: Cute Lobster, Confident Tech Lobster, Bartender Lobster. **Lesson:** AI image generation is stochastic. Same prompt, different results. Brute force works.
